Its reported in the press that British Airways intend to charge passengers to choose their seat. This effectively makes couples and families pay to guarantee being able to sit together. The charges will affect those seeking to ensure they sit together on a flight and people with a preference for window, aisle or emergency exit seats. The charge is effective from the 7th of October. Presently the airline allows passengers to reserve seats only in the 24 hours prior to departure.
This new charge is aimed at passengers who want to reserve seats earlier than this. Charges are likely to be £20 on long-haul economy or short flights in business class, while a seat in an emergency exit row will cost £50. European flights may be in the region of £10.
Seats can be booked between 10 and four days before take-off.
A BA spokeswoman said: "Customers frequently request specific seats, but in the past we've only been able to confirm them 24 hours in advance or on the day. The airline is justifying the move on the basis that it gives customers the control of their seating preferences it follows recent changes in service with reduced luggage allowances and the cutting of free in flight meals on short haul flights.
